Our reason for being

Bodega MERGUS - The Origin

"Gustavo Enrique Fernández Brito, along with his wife, Mercedes Brito Rodríguez, embark on a new journey in the world of wine by launching their own brand, 'Mergus.'"

The plots of their vineyards have different microclimates, as they are located in various places and at different altitudes on the island of La Palma. All their grape varieties are native to La Palma.

On the steep plots of Puntagorda, between 1100 and 1300 meters above sea level, they cultivate Albillo Criollo, Listán Blanco, and Negramol grapes. In the Altos de Bellido, approximately 1000 meters high in Tijarafe, they grow Listán Blanco, Listán Prieto, and Negramol. All of them are cultivated on terraced slopes with a dizzying incline.

And at an approximate altitude of 400 meters, they have vineyards in Garafía where they cultivate the Listán Negro variety.

Finally, in San Simón, in the Mazo area, at about 250 meters altitude, they have terraced plots with Vijariego Negro and Malvasía.

All the wines produced by Vinos Mergus have the Denomination of Origin La Palma, and they create four varieties of red wine and another four of white wine.

Due to the terrain's topography, harvesting is done entirely by hand, with scrupulous respect for the environment and meticulous care, immense effort, and the desire to produce the best wines with a very high standard of quality. All wine varieties produced are based on the philosophy of meticulous handling of the grapes and their surroundings from the vineyard to the winery. They meticulously nurture the crafting of their magnificent artisanal wines.

Gustavo Enrique Fernández Brito, together with his wife, has dedicated their lives to wine in La Palma, and now they embark on a new stage, launching their own brand, "Mergus."

  • VIJARIEGO NEGRO

Grapes situated in plots about 250 meters above sea level, which provide us with a wine featuring earthy, mineral aromas, and a very tasty aftertaste.

  • NEGRAMOL

Plots located in Tijarafe, this grape gives us smooth, fresh, and aromatic wines, with the medium intensity typical of young wines.

The tannins give us a creamy and long aftertaste.

  • LISTAN PRIETO

The grapes are situated at about 1350 meters above sea level in El Reventón (Puntagorda) in the northwest of La Palma, where it is cold, resulting in a wine with a fresh aftertaste and pleasant hints of tart strawberry.

  • LISTAN NEGRO

Grapes cultivated in Garafía and Puntagorda, in plots located at 450 and 750 meters altitude. We achieve a wine with a strong aroma reminiscent of red fruits. On the palate, it is balanced and powerful.

  • LISTAN BLANCO

The most widespread grape variety on the island of La Palma, vineyards at 1300 meters altitude in the northwest area of the island. The day-night temperature contrast gives rise to an exceptional wine, very balanced, which fills the mouth with its aroma and pleases the eye with its greenish reflections.

  • ALBILLO CRIOLLO

The grapes are cultivated on trellises with irrigation, at 1,100 meters above sea level, providing a crystal-clear white wine with balsamic notes and a refreshing taste on the palate.

  • ALBILLO CRIOLLO BLANCO AFRUTADO

The plots of these grapes are at high altitude in the northwest area of the island. We achieve a wine with high aromatic intensity, citrusy and fruity.
